Recently, the first domestic unit for catalytic cracking dry gas purification and ethylene recovery, jointly developed by Sichuan Tianyi Science and Technology Co., Ltd. and Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Branch, has officially started operations at the Yanshan Refinery. All technical and economic indicators have met the design specifications. According to a technical review by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this technology is the first of its kind in China, with no similar industrial installations reported globally. This breakthrough holds significant demonstration value for the efficient utilization of petroleum resources and addressing the growing gap between oil supply and demand.
Catalytic cracking dry gas contains valuable chemical raw materials such as ethylene, which was previously wasted due to a lack of industrial recovery methods. Over the past two years, scientists and engineers from Tianke and Yanshan have implemented innovative technologies, including pressure swing adsorption, wet desulfurization, and decarbonization, to purify ethylene, ethane, and propylene from the dry gas. The resulting industrial plant at Yanshan achieves an ethylene yield of 85%, recovering 7 tons of ethylene per hour, generating an additional annual economic benefit of 150 million yuan. With an initial investment of 120 million yuan, the project can be fully recouped within less than a year.
Moreover, hydrogen recovered from the adsorbed exhaust gas can provide low-cost hydrogen for cleaner gasoline and diesel production. When combined with other processes like dilute ethylene ethylbenzene and DCC (Deep Catalytic Cracking), this technology can create a more competitive route for producing basic organic chemicals.
Industry experts estimate that China's current catalytic cracking capacity is 93 million tons per year, generating about 4.14 million tons of dry gas annually. This gas contains approximately 730,000 tons of ethylene, 725 tons of ethane, 110,000 tons of propane, and 40,000 tons of other hydrocarbons, along with 110,000 tons of hydrogen. If this technology is widely adopted nationwide, it could save 4.15 million tons of light oil used in ethylene production each year, adding nearly 10 billion yuan in new economic benefits. Based on a light oil yield of 73%, it would also reduce crude oil processing by 5.68 million tons annually, decreasing reliance on foreign oil by 2 percentage points.
