Recently, the first domestic unit for catalytic cracking dry gas purification and ethylene recovery, jointly developed by Sichuan Tianyi Science and Technology Co., Ltd. and Sinopec Beijing Yanshan Branch, has been successfully launched at the Yanshan Refinery. All technical and economic indicators have met the design requirements. According to a technical evaluation by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this technology is the first of its kind in China, with no similar industrial installations reported globally. This breakthrough marks an important step forward in the efficient utilization of petroleum resources and helps alleviate the growing gap between oil supply and demand.
Catalytic cracking dry gas contains significant amounts of basic chemical raw materials like ethylene, which were previously burned off due to a lack of industrial recovery methods. Over the past two years, scientists and engineers from Tianke and Yanshan have made technological advancements in processes, adsorbents, and valves, including pressure swing adsorption, wet desulfurization, and decarbonization. These innovations have enabled the effective purification of ethylene, ethane, and propylene from the dry gas. The industrial plant built at Yanshan Company achieves an ethylene yield of up to 85%, recovering 7 tons of ethylene per hour. This translates into annual economic benefits of approximately 150 million yuan. The 120 million yuan investment in the plant can be fully recovered within less than a year.
Moreover, hydrogen can be further recovered from the exhaust gas generated during the process, providing a low-cost source of hydrogen for cleaner gasoline and diesel production. When combined with other technologies such as dilute ethylene ethylbenzene and DCC processes, this system can create a more competitive route for producing basic organic chemicals.
Industry experts estimate that China's current catalytic cracking capacity stands at 93 million tons per year, generating about 4.14 million tons of dry gas annually. This gas contains approximately 730,000 tons of ethylene, 725 tons of ethane, 110,000 tons of propane, and 40,000 tons of other hydrocarbons. If this technology is widely adopted across the country, it could save 4.15 million tons of light oil used in ethylene production each year, adding nearly 10 billion yuan in new economic value. Based on a light oil yield of 73%, crude oil processing volume could be reduced by 5.68 million tons annually, reducing reliance on foreign oil by about 2 percentage points. This innovation not only enhances resource efficiency but also supports national energy security.
