The brake quality of eight cities across the country is 78.7%

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce recently commissioned the National Non-metallic Mineral Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center to conduct quality checks on automotive brake linings sold by 75 auto parts stores across eight cities, including Nanjing, Guangzhou, and Beijing. A total of 127 samples were collected, and the overall pass rate was 78.7%. Despite this, the inspection revealed several serious issues that raise concerns about product safety and compliance. One major problem identified was related to production and sales licenses. Out of the 38 groups tested, 13 failed to meet standards. Additionally, 21 samples lacked any mention of the production license number on their packaging or certificates, while 15 had inconsistent license marks and numbers, raising suspicions of counterfeiting. Two samples even carried revoked temporary license numbers, indicating possible illegal operations. Another alarming finding was in the quality of products sold by 4S dealers. Many of the auto parts did not include any information about the manufacturer. Instead, they only displayed logos and model numbers from the original equipment manufacturers. Most lacked any certification, let alone a license number or the required friction coefficient value. Friction coefficient specification is crucial for ensuring proper braking performance. According to national standards, each type of brake lining must have a clearly stated friction coefficient value based on its intended use. However, nine samples failed to provide this critical information on either the packaging or certificate, making them non-compliant with regulations. Counterfeiting remains a significant issue. Three samples were confirmed by the original manufacturers to be fake, highlighting the ongoing challenge of counterfeit goods in the market. Industry regulators are urging consumers to pay close attention to two key elements when purchasing brake linings: the production license number and the specified friction coefficient. Products without these details are likely to be substandard and unsafe. Legitimate brake pads should have clear labeling, including the production license (XK23-204-00XXX), friction coefficient, standard number, manufacturer’s name, address, contact information, batch number, and date. Drivers should also choose brake pads based on their vehicle’s needs. For low-speed driving, a friction coefficient around 0.35 is suitable, while high-speed or long-distance driving requires a higher coefficient of 0.40 or more. Lastly, consumers are advised to buy from authorized dealers and request proper documentation and an invoice. Avoiding extremely cheap options—such as brake pads priced at 25 yuan or less for four-disc sets, or 5 yuan per kilogram for drum pads—is essential, as such low prices often indicate poor-quality materials and potential safety risks. Always prioritize safety over cost.
