Great Wall Motor has made a significant breakthrough by introducing its first domestically developed diesel engine that incorporates the most advanced electronically controlled high-pressure common rail technology. This innovative engine, known as the "Intelligent Fuel Saver" INTEC, will be integrated into the Haval diesel models and the high-end Great Wall K2 pickup truck, set to launch in the second half of the year. It marks a major milestone for China's independent automotive industry, as only a handful of countries have mastered this cutting-edge technology.
The name "INTEC" reflects the engine’s intelligent design, with "IN" standing for intelligence, "TEC" for technology, and "E" for economize. It also features TC (TurboCommonRail) supercharged common rail technology, and the final "C" represents Great Wall Power. The engine was jointly developed with Bosch, a global leader in diesel technology, ensuring top-tier performance and reliability.
This new engine offers powerful and stable performance, low noise levels, and improved fuel efficiency. It can start at -35°C, thanks to the GSK-type glow plug and German Bosch diesel technology. It also includes a cooling EGR system and emission treatment device, meeting Euro III emission standards.
In recent years, Great Wall Motor has focused on building core engine technologies, establishing its own internal combustion engine manufacturing company in 2000 and investing heavily in modern production facilities. By 2003, it expanded its production lines and launched several advanced engines in collaboration with international partners. The introduction of the INTEC engine marked a new era for self-developed diesel engines in China.
Currently, Great Wall’s engine division produces five types of gasoline and diesel engines, used not only in its own vehicles like Haval, Saifu SUV, and Saiying RUV, but also supplied to over a dozen domestic automakers. In the pickup truck market, Great Wall engines hold nearly half of the domestic share.
According to industry data, 60% of pickup trucks in the market are equipped with Great Wall engines. These engines are sold nationwide and exported globally, with the 491QE model being one of the most popular. The INTEC engine has been tested under extreme conditions in regions like the Middle East, North Africa, and South Africa, where it has proven its reliability and power.
With its high torque output between 1600-2600 rpm, the engine delivers 225 Nm of maximum torque, significantly outperforming traditional turbocharged diesel engines. It also reduces noise by over 16% through high-pressure common rail direct injection, offering a smoother, quieter ride—similar to a gasoline engine. Its energy-saving design improves combustion efficiency by 8%, lowers fuel consumption by more than 20%, and reduces CO₂ emissions by 15%.
The INTEC engine combines the responsiveness of a gasoline engine with the fuel efficiency and low emissions of a diesel engine, making it a game-changer in the automotive industry.
