The brake quality of eight cities across the country is 78.7%

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce recently commissioned the National Non-metallic Mineral Products Quality Supervision and Inspection Center to conduct quality checks on automotive brake linings sold by 75 auto parts stores across eight cities, including Nanjing, Guangzhou, and Beijing. A total of 127 samples were collected, and the overall pass rate was 78.7%. While this indicates that most products meet basic quality standards, the results also reveal several serious issues in the market. During the inspection, numerous problems were found regarding production and sales licenses. Out of the 38 samples tested for license identification, 13 failed. Additionally, 21 samples lacked any mention of the production license number on their packaging or certificates. Another 15 samples had mismatched license numbers and marks, raising concerns about possible counterfeiting. Two samples even carried revoked temporary license numbers, indicating potential violations of regulations. Brake linings sold through 4S dealerships also showed significant issues. Many of the products lacked clear information about the manufacturer. Instead, they only featured logos and model compatibility details from the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Most did not include a certificate, let alone the required production license number or specified friction coefficient. This lack of transparency raises questions about product authenticity and safety. Another major concern is the absence of specified friction coefficients on some products. According to national standards, each type of brake lining must have a clearly defined friction coefficient value based on its intended use and manufacturing process. However, nine samples in this test did not provide this critical information on their packaging or certificates, making it impossible for consumers to determine if the product is suitable for their vehicle. Counterfeiting remains a growing problem. Three samples were confirmed by the manufacturers as not being their products, suggesting that counterfeit items are still circulating in the market. Industry regulators advise consumers to pay close attention to the production license and friction coefficient markings when purchasing brake linings. Products without these two key elements may not meet quality or safety standards. Legitimate manufacturers typically provide detailed information on their packaging, including the production license number (e.g., XK23-204-00XXX), friction coefficient, standard number, manufacturer details, and batch information. Drivers should choose brake pads with the appropriate friction coefficient depending on their driving conditions. For low-speed driving, a coefficient of around 0.35 is recommended, while for long-distance or steep slope braking, a coefficient of 0.40 or higher is advised. In addition, consumers are encouraged to purchase from authorized and reputable auto parts stores. Always ask for proper documentation and request an official invoice. Avoid buying brake pads at extremely low prices—such as discs priced below 25 yuan for four units or drum discs under 5 yuan per kilogram—as these could be made with substandard materials, posing a risk to safety.
