Status and Characteristics of Gas Pipeline Valves

The status quo and future of China's natural gas industry reflect a strategic shift towards cleaner energy sources, driven by rapid economic growth and rising public demand for environmental quality. As a result, natural gas—known for its high efficiency, cleanliness, and low emissions—has become a key focus for the Chinese government. Major infrastructure projects such as the West-East Gas Pipeline, East-West Gas Transmission, and the importation of Russian natural gas have underscored the importance of natural gas in meeting national energy needs while promoting sustainable development. China Gas has established 46 joint ventures across over a dozen provinces along the East-West and East Sichuan Gas Pipelines, investing in more than 50 pipeline projects. This number is expected to grow as the company expands its market presence. The successful completion of the West-East Gas Pipeline project not only enhanced China’s pipeline network but also laid the foundation for a nationwide system that supports long-term energy security. Spanning approximately 4,000 kilometers from Lunan in Xinjiang to Shanghai, the West-East Gas Pipeline is one of the most technically challenging projects in China. It crosses multiple regions, including the Gobi Desert, Loess Plateau, and the Taihang Mountains, and crosses major rivers like the Yellow River and Yangtze River. Designed to transport 12 billion cubic meters of gas annually, the pipeline has already exceeded this target, reaching 17 billion cubic meters. Two large underground storage facilities are under construction in the middle and lower reaches, further enhancing the system's capacity and flexibility. This project has significantly boosted regional development, especially in western China, by creating jobs, improving infrastructure, and supporting industrial restructuring. It has also improved energy security and promoted the use of cleaner fuels across the country. Looking ahead, China plans to expand its pipeline network, integrating resources from both onshore and offshore areas, and implementing a “going global” strategy to secure additional natural gas supplies. In addition, the country aims to build a five-horizontal and two-vertical national pipeline network, with key lines connecting the west to the east, north to the south, and coastal areas. These developments will support a diversified energy supply structure, ensuring stable and reliable gas delivery to urban and industrial centers. Regarding natural gas pipeline valves, their design and function differ significantly from standard valves due to the unique challenges of transporting natural gas. First, materials must be corrosion-resistant, especially given the presence of hydrogen sulfide, which can cause severe damage if not properly managed. Second, leakage prevention is critical, particularly in urban areas where pipelines run close to residential and commercial zones. Many valves are designed with welded structures to ensure tight seals and prevent accidents. Third, pipeline valves must operate reliably for decades without interruption. Unlike industrial equipment, they cannot be easily shut down for maintenance, as they serve thousands of users, including households and businesses. Therefore, components like valve seats need to be durable, with lifespans exceeding 30 years. Finally, the operation of these valves requires high-torque drives, such as electric, pneumatic, or electro-hydraulic systems, to handle high pressure and large diameters. They must also meet strict safety standards, including explosion-proof ratings and IP68 protection. In emergency situations, valves must be able to shut off quickly and accurately, often remotely controlled from central stations. Clear indicators of valve positions are essential for efficient operation and emergency response.
