South Korea's "super mini excavator" has successfully achieved local production. On the 11th, HPTS (Hydraulics & Pneumatics), a leading company in the D&D Special Zone specializing in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, announced that it has developed a "small coal mining equipment (mini excavator)." This breakthrough marks a significant shift for South Korea, as it now has the potential to break away from its long-standing reliance on imported small excavators from technologically advanced countries like Germany and Japan.
The development project was supported by the Small and Medium Business Administration through conditional funding for new product development. HPTS collaborated with Ulsan University to conduct joint research and development, ensuring the project combined academic expertise with industrial innovation.
Following the successful development of the excavator, HPTS held an on-site demonstration in Daede District last month. Over 20 representatives from the Korean Coal Company attended the test. A company official stated, "Most of the equipment used by Chinese coal and mining companies is imported, and many of these machines are outdated. This leads to high maintenance and repair costs. After witnessing the on-site experiments, the company executives were highly satisfied with the performance of this excavator."
Currently, large-scale machinery struggles to access underground mines, and excavation from upper and lower vertical positions is inefficient. The newly developed mini excavator, measuring 0.7 meters in width, 3.5 meters in length, and 1.5 meters in height, can rotate between 90° and 180°, with a traction force of 2,000 kg. Its performance was optimized through simulation tests of hydraulic and development systems.
To address safety concerns in underground environments, where flammable gases and dust are common, all components of the machine have been treated for explosion-proof and anti-corrosion protection. Li Yongji, CEO of HPTS, explained, "Most domestic mines have narrow tunnels, typically 3 meters wide and 2.4 meters high, with high levels of flammable gas, dust, and poor temperature conditions. Additionally, the average annual working depth in China’s coal mines exceeds 20 meters. People tend to avoid working underground, so mechanizing the equipment is crucial for improving efficiency."
Li also highlighted the user-friendly design of the excavator: "The driver's station is very close, and there is ample space for the operator. It's easy to use—anyone can learn how to operate it quickly."
The price of this mini excavator is approximately 100 million yuan. Shortly after its launch, a coal company placed an order for 15 units. HPTS aims to sell between 50 and 60 excavators in China in the near future.
Beyond mining, the excavators developed by HPTS are also widely applicable in construction, civil engineering, and agriculture, showcasing their versatility and potential for broader market adoption.
