Market Click: Global ethylene and propylene demand growth slows

According to the Chemical Market Association of Houston, USA, global ethylene demand grew by approximately 3.1% in 2005, marking a slight slowdown compared to the 4% to 5% growth seen in the previous two years. Similarly, propylene demand increased by about 4.1%, which was also lower than the 5% growth recorded in the prior period. In 2005, the world consumed 107 million tons of ethylene and 67.1 million tons of propylene. Looking ahead, it is expected that ethylene demand will grow at an annual rate of 4.3% over the next five years, while propylene demand is projected to rise by 4.8% during the same period. To meet this rising demand, ethylene production capacity is set to expand by 5.4% year-on-year from 2005 to 2010, surpassing the 3.5% growth seen in the previous five years. Meanwhile, propylene production capacity is expected to increase by 5.1% annually between 2005 and 2010, compared to 4.1% from 2000 to 2005. By 2010, global ethylene supply is anticipated to reach 133 million tons, with most of the new capacity coming from the Middle East and Asia, accounting for 51% and 36% respectively. This shift highlights the growing importance of these regions in the global petrochemical industry.
