China's natural gas industry has experienced remarkable growth, driven by the nation's rapid economic development and rising public demand for better living standards and environmental protection. As a clean and efficient energy source, natural gas has become a key focus of government policy. Major projects like the West-East Gas Pipeline, East-West Gas Pipeline, and the import of Russian natural gas have significantly enhanced China's energy infrastructure. China Gas has established 46 joint ventures across over a dozen provinces, investing in more than 50 pipeline projects along the East-West and East Sichuan routes, with the number expected to grow as the market expands.
The successful implementation of the West-East Gas Pipeline Project not only upgraded China’s pipeline network but also laid the foundation for a national grid. This project marked a significant step toward international standards in pipeline construction, featuring long-distance, large-diameter, high-pressure, and highly automated systems. It has created an essential energy artery across the country, boosting regional development, improving energy security, and benefiting millions of people along its route.
Spanning approximately 4,000 kilometers from Xinjiang’s Lunan to Shanghai, the West-East Pipeline is designed to transport 12 billion cubic meters annually, with current capacity exceeding 17 billion. The project includes two major underground storage facilities and crosses challenging terrains such as the Gobi Desert, Loess Plateau, and Taihang Mountains, as well as major rivers like the Yellow River and Yangtze River. It represents one of the most technically complex pipeline projects in China, setting multiple domestic records and even making history in high-speed pipeline construction.
Looking ahead, China plans to expand its pipeline network, integrating resources from eastern, central, western, offshore, and terrestrial areas. The "going global" strategy aims to bring in foreign gas supplies, enhancing the national pipeline system. The goal is to establish a five-horizontal and two-vertical trunk network, including key lines such as the West-East Pipeline, North-to-South Gas Supply, and regional networks in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, and other areas. This will ultimately create a diversified, secure, and extensive natural gas supply system.
In terms of pipeline valves, their design and performance are critical due to the unique challenges of natural gas transmission. Valves must be made from corrosion-resistant materials, especially since natural gas often contains hydrogen sulfide, which can cause severe damage. Leakage prevention is also crucial, as many pipelines run near urban areas, requiring tight sealing and frequent inspections. Valves must be durable, with lifespans of over 30 years, and capable of operating under high pressure and large diameters. They often use electric, pneumatic, or electro-hydraulic drives, with explosion-proof and IP68-rated protections. Emergency shut-off valves must remain open for long periods and close quickly when needed, with accurate position indicators for safe operation. Overall, the reliability and performance of these valves are essential to maintaining the safety and efficiency of the entire natural gas system.
