Russian troops will equip ships with new 3M-47 curved air defense missiles

July 12, Hainan News Network — Russia’s Alitel Maritime Electronic Science Research Institute has successfully completed the national testing of the 3M-47 “Bend” air defense system. This short-range defense system is specifically designed for surface ships and was tested aboard the Russian Navy’s 21630 small gunboat. The 3M-47 “Bend” shares a similar launch module with the “Needle” air defense missile system. The development of the low-magnetic version of the “Bend” system is now nearing completion, and it will be deployed on minesweepers and ground combat units. According to an official from the Alitel Institute, the “Bend” system weighs only 1.3 tons and can be installed on small surface vessels, civilian ships, and various support craft. It can also serve as a close-range air defense system for larger ships, complementing medium- and long-range systems like the “No Wind-1” and “Rif.” The system employs either the “Needle” or “Needle-S” missile, both equipped with passive optical seekers. These missiles can be launched individually (up to eight) or in volleys (two at a time). The detection range for aircraft-like targets is between 12 to 15 kilometers. With a reaction time of less than 8 seconds and a transition time from standby to combat mode of under 3 minutes, the “Bend” system is capable of providing ultra-short-range air defense for ships over 200 tons. It is designed to intercept anti-ship missiles, fighter jets, and helicopters in various interference conditions, making it a valuable addition to modern naval defenses. This system marks a significant step forward in Russia’s efforts to enhance shipboard air defense capabilities, especially for smaller vessels that previously had limited protection against aerial threats.
