Technical Status and Market Analysis of Extrusion Equipment Industry in China

The advancement of extrusion technology is a key indicator of the maturity and innovation level within the plastics industry. While global plastics machinery manufacturing has not seen groundbreaking breakthroughs in recent years, it has continuously evolved and improved upon existing technologies. Compared to developed countries, China’s plastics machinery still lags behind, particularly in areas such as complete systems, equipment performance, processing capabilities, and technical application. However, over the past decade, China has made significant progress, with faster development of new products and technologies, often starting from a higher technological base by adopting and adapting foreign advanced methods. For instance, in the mid-1990s, China introduced its first aluminum-plastic composite pipe production line. Within just five years, more than 50 manufacturers had entered the market. Key technologies like welding and compounding of aluminum pipes were mastered, leading to high-quality solutions that brought product integrity and performance up to international standards. During the same period, advanced equipment such as steel-plastic composite units and gas-fired PE pipe machines were successfully developed. Innovations included high-speed, high-efficiency single-screw extruders for processing medium and high-density polyethylene, as well as high-precision dies with no melting traces, along with advanced configurations for cooling, traction, cutting, and thickness measurement. In recent years, domestic extruders have also moved toward higher torque, speed, and efficiency, with many now using advanced separating screws and slotted barrels. Heads are increasingly adopting internationally recognized designs, such as those suitable for polyolefin basket or plate heads, while programmable controllers and touch-screen industrial computers are widely used. In the field of plastic film processing, screw head technology has gained popularity, and multi-layer co-extruded films have reached up to five layers. Geomembranes now use internal cooling technology, and the width of coextrusion cast films has expanded to 2 meters. Another important development is the focus on intellectual property through technological innovation. Prof. Jiang Bo from Beijing University of Chemical Technology and Beijing Fengji Plastic Machinery Co., Ltd. have developed grinding disc-type mixing extruders, which offer better material fineness and dispersion, expanding the range of processable materials—especially beneficial for magnetic and nano-composite materials. Meanwhile, companies like Beijing Jiancheng Machinery Co., Ltd. have developed steel-plastic composite profile extrusion lines, solving complex issues such as foaming, co-extrusion, and cutting. Shanghai Jinwei Extrusion Machine Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has created a PET/GPET co-extrusion line with a maximum width of 2 meters. The improvement in the level of plastic machinery is also evident in the completeness and universality of equipment. Traditionally, most manufacturers only supplied main engines, leaving auxiliary systems unbalanced. This has changed significantly, with many extruder producers now offering full extrusion lines and even undertaking turnkey projects. Moreover, the expansion into the international market has become a crucial sign of China’s growing influence in the plastics machinery sector. One-third of the products are exported, with export volume accounting for about 30% of domestic sales, and an annual growth rate of 20%. This reflects both the quality improvements and the increasing global recognition of Chinese-made machinery.
