The issue of industrial pollution in the Zhujinggang Chemical Industry Zone, located in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, has long been a major concern for local residents and environmental authorities. This area, home to numerous chemical companies, has historically been a significant source of water pollution, directly affecting the quality of the Xiangjiang River downstream, especially in Changsha. On May 29 last year, a report titled "Xiangtan's Rectification of the Industrial Environment in the Zhujinggang Chemical Industry Zone" was published, highlighting the ongoing efforts to improve the situation. More than a year later, the city has finally taken a new step toward addressing the problem.
According to recent information obtained from the Xiangtan City Environmental Protection Bureau and the Xiangtan Hi-tech Zone New Materials Industrial Park, a large-scale sewage treatment plant is set to be constructed in the Zhujinggang area. The project has already passed expert reviews and is expected to be completed by this winter, with construction scheduled to begin next spring. This initiative aims to tackle the persistent issue of industrial wastewater polluting the river and improve environmental conditions in the region.
Currently, there are 35 former chemical, pharmaceutical, printing, and dyeing companies operating in the zone. Over the past two years, 11 of them have been shut down as part of the rectification process. Presently, the area generates about 6,000 tons of industrial wastewater daily. In an effort to address this, Xiangtan City has planned to integrate the area into a new materials industrial park. So far, more than 20 enterprises have been enrolled in the park, including major players like the Changsha Mining and Metallurgy Research Institute Xiangtan Branch, Kaiyuan Chemical Co., Ltd., and Jinke Industry Co., Ltd.
To ensure that industrial wastewater no longer contaminates the Xiangjiang River, the city has decided to build a centralized sewage treatment facility. This will allow all enterprises within the park to discharge their wastewater through a unified system, which will then be treated before being released.
The feasibility study for the sewage treatment project was prepared by Changsha Xiangniu Company and the Xiangtan Environmental Protection Research Institute. The project is expected to cost 80 million yuan, with over 36 million yuan allocated for the first phase. The initial capacity will be 20,000 tons of wastewater treated daily, and once fully operational, the plant will be able to handle up to 50,000 tons per day. This development marks a significant step forward in the city’s environmental protection efforts and reflects a growing commitment to sustainable industrial development.
