The industrial area of Zhujinggang Port in Xiangtan City, Hunan Province, has long been a focal point for chemical pollution, with numerous chemical companies concentrated there. This has significantly impacted the water quality of the Xiangjiang River, especially in Changsha downstream. On May 29 last year, a report titled "Xiangtan's Rectification of the Industrial Environment in the Zhujinggang Chemical Industry Zone" highlighted the ongoing efforts to address environmental issues in the region. More than a year later, the city has finally taken new steps toward resolving the problem.
According to recent information from the Xiangtan Environmental Protection Bureau and the Xiangtan Hi-tech Zone New Materials Industrial Park, a large-scale sewage treatment plant is set to be built in the area to tackle industrial wastewater pollution. The project has already passed expert reviews and is expected to begin construction next spring after this winter’s preparations are completed.
The Zhujinggang area was once home to 35 chemical, pharmaceutical, printing, and dyeing companies. In the past two years, 11 of them have been shut down or restructured as part of the environmental rectification. Currently, the zone generates about 6,000 tons of industrial wastewater daily. To further improve the situation, Xiangtan has planned to integrate the area into a new materials industrial park. So far, more than 20 enterprises have been enrolled in the park, including major players such as the Changsha Mining and Metallurgy Research Institute Xiangtan Branch, Kaiyuan Chemical Co., Ltd., and Jinke Industry Co., Ltd.
To address the long-standing issue of industrial wastewater polluting the Xiangjiang River, the city has decided to build a centralized sewage treatment facility. All the wastewater generated by the enterprises in the park will be collected and treated before being discharged. This initiative aims to ensure that the river remains clean and safe for downstream communities.
The feasibility study for the project was conducted by Changsha Xiangniu Company and the Xiangtan Environmental Protection Research Institute. The project is estimated to cost 80 million yuan, with over 36 million allocated for the first phase. The initial capacity will be 20,000 tons of wastewater per day, and once fully completed, the plant will be able to treat up to 50,000 tons daily. This development marks a significant step forward in the city’s commitment to sustainable industrial growth and environmental protection.
