Outdoor gas grills and patio heaters are designed for seasonal use. While grills are most popular in the summer, they’re often used during spring and fall as well. Patio heaters, on the other hand, are typically reserved for colder months. Both appliances require minimal upkeep, but regular care is essential to ensure they function properly and last longer.
When you first get a gas grill, it's a good idea to run it for an hour or so to burn off any residue from the manufacturing process. After that, applying a non-stick spray to the cooking surface can help prevent food from sticking, even if you're not planning to use it right away. This small step can save you time and effort in the long run.
The key to keeping your gas grill in top shape is regular cleaning. Use a wire brush to remove stuck-on food and grease, and consider using specialized grill cleaners for tougher buildup. Always cover your grill when it’s not in use to protect it from dust, rain, and other elements that can cause damage over time.
During the winter, it’s wise to take the grill apart and give it a thorough cleaning. Check for any damaged or rusted parts, especially around the burner and connections. Even a little bit of rust can lead to bigger problems if left unchecked.
Another important maintenance task is checking the rubber hose that connects the gas tank to the grill. Small animals like mice and rats can chew through these hoses, leading to gas leaks. If you smell gas when turning on the grill, turn it off immediately and inspect the hose for damage.
Patio heaters are generally simple and reliable, but they still need some care to keep them running smoothly. One of the most important things to do is check the gas cylinder regularly. An empty tank can damage the heater’s internal components over time. If the heater isn’t working, make sure the tank is full and listen for the hissing sound of gas near the burner.
If your heater has an electronic ignition, test it periodically to ensure it produces a strong spark. If it doesn’t, try lighting it with a match or lighter. However, always make sure the gas is turned off while testing the ignition system to avoid accidents.
The gas regulator is another critical component to check. It connects the tank to the burner and should be inspected for wear or damage. Ensure the switch is in the “on†position, as it can accidentally be turned off by bumping into it.
Lastly, check the gas pipe for blockages. While rare, a clogged pipe can prevent the heater from working properly. To clear it, disconnect the pipe from the regulator and blow air through it with enough force to dislodge any debris.
