Maintaining Outdoor Gas Grills and Patio Heaters

9 minute read | PGS Grill

Outdoor gas grills and patio heaters are essential for enjoying the great outdoors, whether it's a summer cookout or a cozy winter evening. These appliances are designed for seasonal use, with gas grills typically used in warmer months and patio heaters more common during colder seasons. While both require minimal maintenance, proper care is crucial to ensure they function safely and efficiently over time.

Gas Grill Maintenance

The first step in maintaining your gas grill is to run it for about an hour after purchase to burn off any manufacturing residue. This helps prevent unwanted flavors and ensures the grill is clean from the start. Afterward, applying a non-stick spray to the cooking grates can help reduce food sticking, even if you're not planning to use the grill right away.

Cleaning is one of the most important parts of routine gas grill maintenance. Using a wire brush is the best way to remove stuck-on food and grease. You can also use specialized grill cleaners to make the job easier. Always cover your grill when not in use to protect it from weather elements and keep it looking new for longer.

During the winter, it's a good idea to disassemble your grill and give it a thorough cleaning. Check for any damaged or rusted parts, as even minor rust should be addressed promptly to avoid further damage. A well-maintained grill will last longer and perform better.

One critical part of maintenance is checking the rubber hose that connects the propane tank to the grill. Small animals like mice and rats may chew on this hose, which can lead to dangerous gas leaks. If you smell gas when turning on the grill, turn it off immediately and inspect the hose for damage.

Preventive Care for Patio Heaters

Patio heaters are simple and reliable, but they still need some regular care to keep them running smoothly. This includes checking the gas cylinder to ensure it's full, as running a heater on an empty tank can cause long-term damage. If the heater doesn't light, listen near the burner to hear the gas flow—this can help determine if the issue is with the fuel or the ignition system.

If your heater has an electronic ignition, check the spark regularly. If the spark is weak, try lighting it with a lighter. However, always make sure the gas is turned off while testing the ignition system to avoid accidents. Safety should always come first when working with gas appliances.

Another key maintenance task is checking the gas regulator. This component connects the tank to the heater and must be inspected for wear or damage. Make sure the regulator switch is in the "on" position, as it’s easy to accidentally turn it off without realizing.

Finally, make sure the gas pipe is clear of blockages. Although rare, clogged pipes can be a serious issue. To check, detach the pipe from the regulator and blow air through it. If there’s resistance, it may be blocked and needs to be cleared.
