Flyability announces UT probe payload for the Elios 3 in partnership with Cygnus

**Lausanne, March 6, 2024**: Flyability, the global leader in confined-space drones, has launched a groundbreaking ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) payload for its flagship drone, the Elios 3. This new feature was developed in collaboration with Cygnus Instruments, a leading name in ultrasonic testing technology, to provide certified inspectors with a reliable and safe tool for critical thickness measurements. The live A-scan UTM payload is designed to measure steel thickness in hard-to-reach areas such as ship hulls, tanks, and pipe clusters. With this addition, the Elios 3 can now access locations that were previously challenging or dangerous for human inspectors. The smart arm equipped with a laser pointer allows for precise targeting of measurement points, while a remotely operated couplant dispenser ensures optimal signal transmission. Each measurement is automatically tagged on a digital twin, streamlining data analysis and improving inspection efficiency. In addition to the UTM payload, the Elios 3 can also carry a cleaning module to prepare surfaces before testing. This makes it an all-in-one solution for non-destructive testing in complex environments. Patrick Thévoz, CEO and co-founder of Flyability, said: “Our customers have been asking for UTM capabilities for years. After four years of development, we’re proud to offer a safe and effective alternative for places where traditional methods fall short.” Cygnus Instruments, with over 40 years of experience in ultrasonic testing, played a key role in integrating the UTM technology into the Elios 3. Their expertise ensures compliance with ISO 16809 standards and delivers high accuracy and reliability. Lulu Crosthwaite-Eyre, Managing Director of Cygnus, added: “This partnership marks a significant step forward in making aerial drone-based inspections more accessible and safer across industries.” The UTM payload was unveiled at the Flyability User Conference in Lausanne. It will be available for demonstration and purchase, with first deliveries expected in Q3 2024. As the third modular payload for the Elios 3, it expands the range of applications for Flyability’s drones in mapping, surveying, and non-destructive testing. Flyability continues to push the boundaries of what drones can do in hazardous and confined spaces. Founded in Switzerland, the company aims to eliminate the need for humans to perform dangerous tasks. Its latest drone, the Elios 3, launched in 2023, already includes a radiation detection and LiDAR surveying payload. With offices in China, Singapore, and the USA, Flyability is expanding its reach globally.
