**Lausanne, March 6, 2024**: Flyability, the global leader in confined-space drones, has launched a groundbreaking ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) payload for its Elios 3 drone. This new feature, developed in collaboration with Cygnus Instruments, a leading name in ultrasonic testing technology, is designed to enhance the capabilities of certified inspectors by enabling accurate and safe thickness measurements in hard-to-reach areas.
The UTM payload allows for real-time A-scan ultrasonic testing, making it ideal for measuring steel thickness in ship hulls, storage tanks, and pipe systems. The Elios 3 can now access tight spaces or high locations that were previously challenging or unsafe for human inspectors. Equipped with a smart arm featuring a laser pointer, the drone ensures precise targeting of measurement points. The arm is also customizable to suit various industrial environments, while a remote couplant dispenser ensures optimal signal transmission.
Each measurement is automatically tagged on a digital twin of the asset, streamlining data analysis and reporting. Additionally, the Elios 3 can carry a cleaning module to prepare surfaces before testing, ensuring accurate results every time.
“Since our early projects with oil and gas, maritime, and chemical industry clients, we've consistently heard the need for UTM alongside visual inspections,†said Patrick Thévoz, CEO and co-founder of Flyability. “This development took four years of research and engineering, but it's now a reliable, safe, and efficient alternative for places where traditional methods like scaffolding or cherry pickers can't reach.â€
Quality and compliance have been central to the development of this payload. Flyability’s partnership with Cygnus ensured seamless integration of ultrasonic technology into the Elios 3, creating a solution tailored for tough inspection environments. The software integration with Flyability’s Cockpit app allows real-time visualization of A-scans, along with manual control over gain and gates. The payload also supports through-coating echo-echo measurement using twin crystal piezo-electric transducers, meeting ISO 16809 standards and delivering exceptional accuracy.
Lulu Crosthwaite-Eyre, Managing Director of Cygnus Instruments, added: “Over the past two decades, there’s been a growing demand for aerial drone-based inspection. With Cygnus’ 40 years of experience in UT, we’re proud to collaborate on this innovative UTM payload for the Elios 3. It’s a step forward in safer and more efficient non-destructive testing across multiple industries.â€
The UTM payload was unveiled at the Flyability User Conference in Lausanne, Switzerland. It will be available for demonstration and purchase, with first deliveries expected in Q3 2024. As the third modular payload for the Elios 3, it expands the drone’s applications in mapping, surveying, and non-destructive testing across various sectors.
