Beijing State III Truck Market Survey

**Light Trucks: A Mix of Readiness and Uncertainty** A few days ago, several readers contacted the newspaper, asking about the availability of light trucks in Beijing as the city prepares to implement the National III emission standards. With the deadline approaching, there are now several truck models on the market that meet the new requirements, but many are still waiting for the right time to buy. To provide more insight, a reporter recently visited several truck dealers in Beijing without prior notice. The findings revealed that the current state III light truck market is quite mixed—some dealers have stock, while others are still waiting for their products to be approved. There are numerous domestic manufacturers of light trucks, but not all are fully prepared. Most companies do not yet have vehicles that meet the National III standard. During the visit, the reporter focused on major brands such as Foton, Dongfeng, JAC, Yuejin, Jiangling, Liberation, and Qingling. According to the survey, only a few models like Foton Ao Ling, Jianghuai Weiling, and Qingling met the National III criteria. Other brands had not yet been included in Beijing’s environmental protection directory, which means they cannot be registered or licensed in the city. During the visits, six dealers confirmed that they currently do not have any National III light trucks in stock. Some said they would need to wait between one and six months. However, special dealers of Futian, Jianghuai, and Qingling claimed to have sufficient inventory and offered quick delivery if a deposit was made. One JAC dealer was eager to promote his products, saying that after the implementation of the National III standard, sales would pick up quickly. Another Jiangling dealer recommended Futian Ao Ling, stating it was already compliant with the regulations and could be driven on major roads without issues. Interestingly, different dealers of the same brand had varying levels of availability. One Futian dealer said he had National III models, while another denied having them. This inconsistency shows the uncertainty in the market. Some dealers claimed that even Country II light trucks could still be licensed. One representative from Beijing Henghong Weiye Trade Co. mentioned that many Country II models were already registered and could be transferred to new owners. He also noted that prices had dropped significantly compared to last year. Another dealer from Beijing Laoyan Automobile Service Center said that most of their Country II models had already been sold, and only a few remained. They expected to start selling National III models by July. Despite the challenges, some manufacturers are adjusting their strategies. While Beijing has implemented the National III standard earlier, other regions have not. As a result, some companies are focusing on foreign markets temporarily. In the heavy truck segment, the situation is even more challenging. Only a few dealers had National III models available, and most required waiting until late July or later. Some companies were still awaiting approval from the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau. The cost of National III engines is also a concern. Many trucks use imported components, making them significantly more expensive than previous models. One Valin dealer mentioned that the cost difference could be over 10 million yuan. Overall, the early implementation of the National III standard in Beijing has created a tough environment for truck manufacturers. Some companies are struggling to keep up, while others are trying to adapt. However, those who act quickly may gain an advantage in the long run. As the deadline approaches, the market remains uncertain, but for those willing to move fast, there are still opportunities to enter the Beijing market and prepare for the nationwide rollout next year.
