Excerpts from the Bellevillenews-democrat.com:
This morning, chaos erupted at 5:15 a.m. in Glen Carbon, Illinois, when flames engulfed a house belonging to Cristy Lynn Campbell. Tragically, one adult perished in the fire, but six children—siblings all under the age of 14—managed to escape. Glen Carbon lies roughly 30 miles east of St. Louis.
According to Sheriff John Lakin, the identity of the deceased remains undisclosed, but Cristy Campbell's estranged husband and the father of the children, Justin Campbell, has not been located. Some of the children fled to a nearby Wal-Mart, while others sought refuge in a neighbor's home. Those who reached the store approached a worker arriving on shift and urged them to dial 911.
When firefighters arrived, neither Cristy Campbell nor their 3-month-old son were present in the burning home.
At 5:31 a.m., a passerby driving past Silver Lake in Highland, Illinois—a location approximately 16 miles from the residence—noticed a vehicle descending a slope toward the water and immediately contacted emergency services.
Highland Fire Department Paramedic Todd Zobrist sprang into action, plunging into the icy 46-degree water and swimming about 50 to 75 feet to reach the submerged SUV. Inside, he discovered a baby floating helplessly. Pulling the infant by the arm onto the vehicle's hood, Zobrist initiated CPR before towing the child back to land.
Initially non-responsive, the baby is now expected to make a full recovery and may be discharged from a hospital in St. Charles, Missouri, as early as tomorrow.
Following the rescue, authorities commenced a search of the lake. Around 11:15 a.m., a body was recovered from the waters. While identification is pending, law enforcement has ceased looking for Cristy Campbell.
Court documents reveal that Cristy Campbell and Justin Campbell, 37, had a tumultuous relationship. In 2005, prior to their marriage, Justin faced charges for domestic violence after allegedly assaulting Cristy, then known as Cristy Brueggemann, while she was pregnant. He received a sentence of probation and a fine of $500 in March 2006.
Despite the incidents, they tied the knot on November 3, 2006. However, Cristy petitioned for legal separation in September 2010, which was dismissed just two months later.
In April 2012, Cristy secured an emergency protective order against her spouse and filed for divorce, accusing him of frequent physical abuse, including punching and choking her.
The divorce was finalized in February 2013.
Sheriff Lakin mentioned that Glen Carbon police have responded to multiple calls at Campbell's residence, including some involving domestic disputes.
Currently, the children are under the care of Illinois authorities and are set to be placed with relatives.
This story continues to unfold, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
