Long-distance transportation is not a fundamental principle of energy development, especially when it comes to alternative energy sources like dimethyl ether (DME). Industry experts have pointed out that if alternative energy fails in the end, it will be due to technological limitations. When such energy isn't widely adopted, the market will ultimately decide its fate.
Currently, a more concerning issue is that the energy industry has become overly reliant on what is metaphorically called the "long march." In the past, the Long March was a desperate last resort, but today, the energy sector sees this long-distance transport as a normal and even positive practice—whether it's for power, petroleum, or coal. However, this kind of long-distance movement is not a natural law of energy development. It raises serious safety concerns and leads to unnecessary waste of energy and resources. Therefore, we must study the true laws of energy development, take into account the transportation radius, and avoid treating the "long march" as an inherent part of energy policy.
It’s also worth noting that the National Development and Reform Commission once issued a policy regarding the use of coal chemical industries, stating that new DME production capacity should not be less than 50,000 tons. This implies that a large portion of the production must rely on long-distance transportation. However, due to restrictions on DME usage and transportation range, many small-scale DME projects are still being launched across different regions.
The issue of DME transportation distance cannot be clearly addressed in the current documents. Some policies may also fail to be properly implemented after being released. Therefore, technological solutions should be allowed to address these challenges.
At present, there is no standard for long-distance transportation of LPG, and the same goes for DME. Market access standards need to be established. However, the DME project is highly dependent on the transportation radius in certain areas. If developed on a large scale, operating costs could become unmanageable, and profitability would be challenging.
The country has placed great emphasis on the development of DME standards. Currently, urban construction standards for DME have been finalized and took effect on January 1st. A chemical industry standard was also implemented last October 1st. But these two standards alone are not sufficient. National-level standards must be introduced to ensure consistency and safety.
As an alternative energy source and clean fuel, DME can be blended with liquefied petroleum gas or natural gas to increase heat output. DME with a purity over 95% can be directly used as a substitute for liquefied gas and shows promising development potential. The future alternative products should be fuels suitable for China’s energy structure. DME should follow a path of large-scale development, and the industry should be based on coal as the main raw material.
