Commercial building fire in Des Plaines, 12/29/17

On December 29, 2017, firefighters from Des Plaines responded to a fire at the Car-X Muffler shop located at 1108 E. Oakton, approximately half a mile from Station 62. Upon arrival, Engine 62 reported flames and immediately initiated an interior attack. Soon after, fire was visible from two sides of the building and through the roof, prompting the decision to switch to an exterior attack. Both Des Plaines tower ladders were deployed as the incident escalated to a working fire. The B-sector wall collapsed within minutes, taking part of the roof with it. A MABAS Box Alarm was activated, bringing in additional resources. Park Ridge Tower Ladder 36 was dispatched to the rear of the building, supplying a third elevated master stream from a Rosemont engine. At the scene, several Des Plaines units were present, including Engine 61, 62, and 63, Tower 61 and 63, Ambulances 61, 62, and 63, and Battalion 61, 6100, and 6101. Mutual aid support came from Park Ridge, Rosemont, Glenview, North Maine, Elk Grove Township, Schiller Park, Morton Grove, Skokie, Northbrook, Wheeling, Mount Prospect, and others. Several photographers were on-site, and this is the first of multiple updates to follow. More photos are available at Shapirophotography.net.
