On December 29, 2017, firefighters from Des Plaines responded to a fire at the Car-X Muffler shop located at 1108 E. Oakton. The incident occurred just half a mile from Station 62. Upon arrival, Engine 62 reported visible flames and initiated an interior attack. However, within minutes, fire was seen from multiple sides and through the roof, prompting an immediate shift to an exterior attack. Both Des Plaines tower ladders were deployed as the situation escalated to a working fire.
The B-sector wall collapsed shortly after, taking part of the roof with it. A MABAS Box Alarm was activated, bringing additional resources to the scene. Park Ridge Tower Ladder 36 arrived at the rear to provide a third elevated master stream, supported by a Rosemont engine.
At the scene, a total of 20 units were present, including Des Plaines engines 61, 62, and 63, towers 61 and 63, ambulances 61, 62, and 63, and Battalion 61, 6100, and 6101. Mutual aid companies included Park Ridge Tower 36 and Ambulance 36, Rosemont Engine 156, Glenview Engine 8, North Maine Engine 1, Elk Grove Township Engine 11, Schiller Park Tower 5 and Battalion 5, Morton Grove Quint 4, Skokie Tower 16, Northbrook Ambulance 10, Wheeling Ambulance 24, a warming bus from Mount Prospect, and Elk Grove Ambulance 7.
Several onlookers and media personnel were also present, and this is the first in a series of updates. More photos are available at Shapirophotography.net.
