Box Alarm house fire in Des Plaines, 8-16-19

On late Friday night, Des Plaines firefighters responded to a fire at 555 Leahy Circle East, where the blaze started in the basement. Upon arrival, emergency personnel observed visible flames and the alarm was upgraded to a working fire before units reached the scene. The dispatch had previously noted that the home was in a hoarder condition, a detail confirmed by the first arriving officer who circled the property. Residents were already outside, and firefighters struggled to gain entry due to the cluttered environment. Before making a direct attack, crews cut several vent holes in the roof as part of a defensive strategy. Firefighters faced significant challenges in accessing the fire's origin because of the extreme disarray inside the house. The fire had spread from the basement to the second floor, with parts of the first floor also compromised. Hand lines were directed through windows and doorways, but reaching the seat of the fire remained difficult. After withdrawing interior crews, the incident was escalated to a Box Alarm to bring in more resources. Firefighters eventually let the fire burn until it became visible and accessible from the exterior. A tower ladder was deployed, and a master stream was used from the ground level through the front door and living room. Once positioned above the structure, the ladder provided access to the fire that had vented through the roof. Hand lines were then placed around the entire perimeter of the house. By 4:00 AM, the majority of the fire was under control, though crews continued to work on the scene for several more hours. All Des Plaines fire units were present, along with mutual aid from surrounding departments including Prospect Heights, Mount Prospect, North Maine, Elk Grove Township, Wheeling, Park Ridge, Chicago Squad 7, Rosemont, Bensenville, and Glenview. The fire caused extensive damage, with heavy smoke pouring from windows and the roof, and flames engulfing large portions of the home. Multiple photos captured the intensity of the situation, showing thick smoke curling around the structure and flames spreading rapidly through the hoarder’s residence. Despite the challenging conditions, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
