For large vessels, such as 10,000-ton ships, precise speed control is critical. These ships have large hulls and significant inertia, making them difficult to stop quickly. During docking or anchoring, their speed must be reduced to less than 0.1 to 0.3 knots—equivalent to less than 1 meter per minute. Accurate speed measurement is therefore vital to ensure safe and controlled operations.
Doppler navigation sonar systems use the Doppler effect to measure a ship’s ground speed with high precision, typically achieving an accuracy of 0.01 knots. This level of accuracy meets the strict requirements for safe docking. The sonar’s transducer is usually mounted on the front part of the ship’s bottom, emitting narrow beams at an angle forward or backward. As the ship moves, the echoes from the undulating seafloor experience a frequency shift, which is used to calculate the ship’s speed relative to the seabed.
To further improve accuracy and reduce errors caused by ship sway or variations in echo frequency, some systems emit sound waves in four directions from the ship’s bottom. This multi-beam approach ensures more reliable ground speed readings. With this information, the captain can make precise adjustments to the ship’s direction and speed, ensuring safe and efficient docking, especially for large vessels where even small miscalculations can lead to serious consequences.
