Smokin’ Heroes competition in Johnston, IA

Hi there, This is Sgt. Grandon from the Johnston, IA police department. I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to personally reach out to let you know about our upcoming event, the Smokin’ Heroes BBQ competition, which is just around the corner. It’s happening over the evening of June 18th (with rules and meat distribution) and continues into the tasting and judging session on June 19th, 2021. The event will take place during the Johnston Green Days festival, and it’s shaping up to be another fantastic day filled with good food, friendly competition, and great company. The main goal of this year's Smokin’ Heroes competition is to support a wonderful cause. The funds raised will help local Johnston youth attend an incredible international camp known as TOKA. They’ll also have the unique opportunity to visit our sister city, Peja, in Kosovo—a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience that can’t be replicated in a classroom. This trip isn’t just about travel; it’s about fostering global connections and broadening their horizons, something we deeply value as a department. Now, here’s where you come in! The competition brings together police, firefighters, military personnel, and public safety enthusiasts to compete for bragging rights, the coveted Smoking Heroes Championship Belt, and cash prizes. Each team will receive pork loin, ribs, and whole chicken to work with—talk about some serious firepower in the smoker! And don’t worry if you’re not an expert chef—teams only require one member from police, fire, military, or public safety to participate. Last year, we had roughly 1,500 to 2,000 attendees, and we’re hoping for even more participation this time around. We’d love for you to join us and bring your friends, family, or colleagues.
