This is something I witnessed earlier today. Around noon on September 23rd, 2016, emergency services in Wheeling were called out to 92 George Road following reports of a single-car accident with someone trapped inside. When the police and firefighters arrived, they found a small SUV perched sideways on the support cables of a utility pole right in front of a house. The driver was conscious but couldn't get out on their own.
The firefighters quickly secured the vehicle to make sure it wouldn’t move while they worked. They managed to carefully extract the driver, who was then taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, a team from Com Ed came to assess the situation and confirmed that the utility pole had been damaged. To ensure safety, they used a truck-mounted crane to stabilize the pole before cutting the two steel cables. This allowed the car to be lowered safely to the ground for removal.
It was quite an unusual scene, and I managed to take some photos that really capture what happened. You can see the car precariously balanced on those support cables, the firefighters working with their equipment, and even the moment when the car was finally brought back down to solid ground.
