New engine for Mattoon

Excerpts from Herald-Review.com:

A new combined rescue pumper is set to join the Mattoon Fire Department’s fleet on Monday, replacing two older vehicles and improving efficiency for emergency response.

The E-ONE rescue pumper features a 780-gallon water tank mounted on a Typhoon chassis. It includes a hydraulic cutter and spreader at the front bumper, powered by an onboard hydraulic pump, as well as a remote-controlled light tower for better visibility during nighttime or low-light operations.

The city acquired the $564,626 unit with the help of a $285,715 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from FEMA. Fire Chief Tony Nichols submitted the application on March 3, 2016, and received approval just over two months later on May 20, 2016. This funding was crucial, as the department had been saving for years but needed the grant to make the purchase possible. Prior to this, Chief Nichols had applied for similar grants three or four times without success.

With the new rescue pumper now in service, the department plans to sell its 1978 rescue truck and 1987 engine online. The 1993 rescue and 1998 engine will remain in reserve, ensuring continued readiness for emergencies.
