German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue Selects Mercedes-Benz Axor Truck with Allison Fully Automatic Transmission

Two years ago, the German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue (THW) publicly tendered for the purchase of new equipment vehicles to modernize its fleet. One of the necessary components is an automatic gearbox designed to reduce the driver's burden. The vehicle solution provided by Rosenbauer (Luxembourg) with Allison automatic gearbox and Mercedes-Benz Axor chassis was persuasive. 54 new cars were delivered to local civil defense organizations in 2010.

The German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue (THW) is a German civil defense and disaster management agency with a history of more than 60 years. The unique feature of this institution worldwide is that it has more than 80,000 members and volunteers to provide fast and professional technical and humanitarian support, of which only 1% are full-time employees.

Snowstorms, storms, landslides, accidents, earthquakes or floods... The German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue (THW) provides civil defense, accident management and technical assistance for all types of accidents. In Germany, this aid work is usually carried out with the national fire brigade and emergency rescue service. The highly professional team of the German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue (THW) is also involved in international rescue operations such as the Pakistan Flood or the Haiti Earthquake. These teams can be assembled in just a few hours.

The German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue (THW) has more than 8,400 vehicles, of which about 800 are multipurpose heavy-duty trucks (eg Axor), ie GKW1. The German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue (THW)'s 668 local organizations (OV) in Germany each have at least one truck of this type. In the ongoing modernization of the fleet, 54 local organizations received the new Axor truck between March and December 2010. The new GKW1Axor replaces vehicles that have been in service for more than 30 years.

The tender of the German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue (THW) lists very specific requirements. In particular, the new GKW series adopts a fully automatic gearbox to reduce the pressure on drivers when performing difficult tasks. "With automatic gearboxes, drivers can't distract themselves by shifting gears, and they can concentrate on driving. This is very important to us," explains Frank Görges, Head of Engineering at the German Federal Agency for Technical Rescue (THW). “In addition, the shift process of fully automatic gearboxes is very smooth and even hard to notice. The colleagues sitting in the car are satisfied with not having to dangle. The shift, the engine speed and the speed of the vehicle can all be at their best. "Görges added.

The future of automatic transmission

Allison realized compared to traditional manual transmission clutch pedal design, full automatic transmission can bring significant benefits to the German Federal Technical Relief Agency (THW). “Allison transmissions can provide a variety of advantages under difficult operating conditions. With the use of torque converters and planetary gear sets, power can be continuously transmitted to the wheels. Because there is no power interruption, even on steep mountain roads, wet On slippery or muddy grounds, vehicles can quickly accelerate and they can easily and safely pass sand or snow,” commented Claus-Peter Geier, market development manager at Allison Transmission Germany.
