BASF announced the Greater China Region's 2011 annual report on July 2, detailing the company's economic, environmental and social performance in the region. This is the fourth consecutive year that BASF has issued a comprehensive annual report in China. Last year, BASF Greater China achieved another record in its history, effectively managed emissions while sales exceeded 6.5 billion euros, and further strengthened its commitment to sustainable development.
According to Guan Zhihua, Chairman of BASF's Greater China Management Board, this report reflects BASF's commitment to transparent reporting on business operations. In 2011, thanks to the upgrading of the sewage treatment facilities, BASF has made progress in a number of environmental indicators as the scale of production has further expanded. For example, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of organic matter discharged by BASF to water bodies in Greater China decreased by 8% to 521 tons; nitrogen emissions decreased by 8.7% to 23 tons; heavy metal emissions decreased to 0.1 tons. In terms of waste management, the solid waste produced by BASF in Greater China decreased from 68,012 tons in 2010 to 67,323 tons. The optimization of the process also increased the recycling efficiency from 64% in 2010 to 80% in 2011.
