Schaumburg firefighter loses battle with cancer

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

Mike Solberg, a 34-year-old firefighter from Schaumburg, passed away this week after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. His fight began in 2019 when he was diagnosed with a glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain tumor.

“It’s with deep sorrow that we share the news of Mike Solberg’s passing,” said the Schaumburg Professional Firefighters Association in a heartfelt post on Facebook. “He was more than a firefighter — he was a true hero, both on and off the job. He lived every moment with strength and grace, and his legacy will live on through all of us.”

Schaumburg Fire Chief David Schumann expressed the department’s grief, saying, “Losing a brother like Mike is heartbreaking. But we know he would want us to carry on, to support each other, and to keep serving our community with the same passion he did.”

Mike, who grew up in Park Ridge and was the son of Palatine Councilman Greg Solberg, joined the Schaumburg Fire Department in October 2012. Just two weeks later, he was rushed to the hospital due to severe headaches, which led to the discovery of a large brain tumor. He underwent surgery shortly after, removing the grade IV glioblastoma.

After a period of remission, he returned to full duty, showing incredible resilience. However, the cancer returned in June of last year, forcing him into light duty and rehabilitation. Despite the challenges, he remained positive and continued to inspire those around him.

In December, his fellow firefighters organized a benefit event at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine to support Mike and his family during this difficult time. The event was a testament to the strong bond among the fire department and the community.

Mike is survived by his wife, Maureen, their young daughter Emma, his parents, a brother, two sisters, and many extended family members. His loss leaves a deep void in the lives of those who knew him.

Visitation will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at Cumberland Chapels, located at 8300 W. Lawrence Ave. in Norridge. The funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, followed by Mass at St. Eugene Church on W. Foster Ave. in Chicago at 10 a.m. Interment will be held at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Schaumburg Firefighters’ Fighting Cancer Pink Tie Ball, an organization that Mike supported deeply throughout his life. You can contribute online at pinktieball4092.com or send checks to 950 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL 60194.

Thanks, Paul
