Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
Schaumburg firefighter Mike Solberg, 34, passed away on Friday after a courageous 3½-year battle with brain cancer. His death has left the entire community and his fellow firefighters in deep sorrow.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our own, Mike Solberg,†shared the Schaumburg Professional Firefighters Association on their Facebook page. “Mike fought until the end and lived every moment to the fullest. He was not only brave but also a true inspiration. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family during this difficult time.â€
Fire Chief David Schumann expressed the department’s grief, saying, “Losing a co-worker and friend is always heartbreaking, but we will get through it. Firefighters are strong and resilient.†He added that firefighter honors will be part of Solberg’s funeral services.
Mike, who lived in Park Ridge and was the son of Palatine Councilman Greg Solberg, joined the Schaumburg Fire Department on October 12, 2012. Just two weeks later, he began experiencing severe headaches that led to an emergency room visit. A CT scan and MRI revealed a large brain tumor, about the size of an orange.
Days after the diagnosis, he underwent surgery to remove a grade IV glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. Though the cancer went into remission, and he returned to full duty, the disease came back last June, forcing him onto light duty as he focused on rehabilitation and therapy.
In December, his colleagues held a benefit event at Durty Nellie’s in Palatine to support Mike and his family, showing the strength of the community around him.
Mike is survived by his wife, Maureen, their young daughter Emma, his parents, a brother, two sisters, and many extended family members.
A visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at Cumberland Chapels, located at 8300 W. Lawrence Ave. in Norridge. The funeral services will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, followed by Mass at St. Eugene Church, 7598 W. Foster Ave. in Chicago, at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1400 S. Wolf Road in Hillside.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Schaumburg Firefighters’ Fighting Cancer Pink Tie Ball. You can contribute online at pinktieball4092.com or send checks to 950 W. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg, IL 60194.
