The Waukegan Fire Department has officially joined the MABAS Division 4 listings, marking the final addition of the last department in the county. Notably, it's also the largest among them. The department operates from five fire stations and maintains a fleet of over 28 pieces of emergency vehicles. Each station is equipped with an ALS (Advanced Life Support) rescue unit, and four engine companies are on duty at all times. At Station 4, a 105-foot Pierce quint works alongside Rescue 1644 to provide comprehensive fire and rescue services.
In addition to regular firefighting operations, Waukegan provides specialized services such as a bomb squad that serves both Lake and McHenry Counties. This unit is based in an annex building at Station 1 and includes a containment vessel for hazardous situations. The department also maintains a dive team, hazmat unit, a large squad, and a 6x6 ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) vehicle stationed at the Waukegan Regional Airport.
Waukegan’s fleet includes a mix of Seagrave and KME engines, a Pierce and Seagrave aerial ladder truck, as well as Medtec, Wheeled Coach, and Taylor Made ambulances. These vehicles support the department’s diverse response needs across the city and surrounding areas.
