The Countryside Fire Department was initially dispatched on Sunday, July 20, 2014, around 8:40 PM to investigate smoke inside a townhouse at 821 Faulkner Place in Vernon Hills. Later that night, around 1:40 AM, while one engine, investigators, and the shift commander were still on the scene, they noticed smoke coming from the adjacent residence. A full still alarm response was sent back to the scene as they discovered a fire in a void space between the units. Highwood Truck 37, which had just finished their shift, responded to the roof after setting up an aerial ladder.

Fire companies were released around 3:00 AM.
