Barrington Countryside FPD signs staffing agreement

From the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District website:

The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (BCFPD) trustees officially signed a contract with Paramedic Services of Illinois (PSI), a local provider based in Schiller Park, to supply 33 full-time firefighter/paramedics starting January 1, 2014, when the district begins its independent operations.

The agreement was finalized during a special meeting on September 5, allowing Fire Chief and Administrator Jeff Swanson to begin coordinating with PSI to staff both the Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington fire stations. Trustees also engaged in early discussions with PSI about hiring additional part-time personnel to further boost staffing levels.

Hiring is expected to start in October, with training and orientation for new hires beginning in early November. All firefighter/paramedics will be employed by PSI but will report directly to Chief Swanson, ensuring a smooth transition and continued service to the community.

As part of the agreement, PSI will hire current Barrington firefighters who are set to lose their jobs with the village in December, giving them the chance to continue their careers within the BCFPD.

Previously, the trustees had postponed signing the contract due to the village’s delay in releasing the names of the affected firefighters. This information is crucial for both the district and the employees to plan effectively.

"We hope the village will release those names as soon as possible so the affected firefighters can apply for positions with the BCFPD," said Chief Swanson.

The new hires will receive the same salary and benefits as they did while working for the village, including paid time off. They will also have the opportunity to advance into leadership roles within the department.

In addition, BCFPD trustees received a strong letter of support from elected officials across several areas, including Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, North and South Barrington, Barrington and Cuba Townships, and Lake County — all jurisdictions served by the district.

The letter praised the decision to move forward with the staffing agreement, stating it "will ensure that well-qualified and experienced personnel — including those who may be laid off due to the village’s reduction in force — remain available to serve the district’s residents."

With the PSI contract now in place, the BCFPD board will next focus on determining a date to divide the shared equipment and apparatus between the district and the village of Barrington. Depending on how this division proceeds, the board may also consider purchasing additional equipment to meet the needs of the newly formed department.
