Barrington Countryside FPD signs staffing agreement

From the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District website: The Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District (BCFPD) trustees officially signed a contract with Paramedic Services of Illinois (PSI), a local provider based in Schiller Park, to supply 33 full-time firefighter/paramedics when the district begins its independent operations on January 1, 2014. The agreement was formalized during a special meeting on September 5, giving Fire Chief and Administrator Jeff Swanson the green light to begin coordinating with PSI to fully staff the fire stations in Barrington Hills and Lake Barrington. In addition to the main staffing agreement, the trustees have also started discussions with PSI about potentially adding more part-time personnel to further boost the department’s capacity. Hiring is expected to start in October, with training and orientation beginning in early November. All firefighter/paramedics will be employed by PSI but will report directly to Chief Swanson. As part of the arrangement, PSI has agreed to hire any current Barrington firefighters who may lose their jobs with the village in December, offering them the chance to continue their careers with the BCFPD. However, the trustees had initially delayed signing the contract due to the village not yet releasing the names of the affected firefighters. This delay made it difficult for both the district and the employees to plan effectively. Chief Swanson expressed hope that the village would release the names as soon as possible, allowing the affected firefighters time to apply for positions with the new district. He emphasized that these individuals will receive the same salary and benefits as they did while working for the village, including paid time off. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to advance into leadership roles within the new department. In a show of support, BCFPD trustees received a letter from elected officials representing several areas served by the district, including Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, North Barrington, South Barrington, Barrington, Cuba Townships, and Lake County. The letter praised the decision to partner with PSI, stating that it ensures the availability of qualified personnel—many of whom could be transitioning from the village—to serve all residents of the district. With the staffing agreement now in place, the next step for the BCFPD board is to finalize the division of shared equipment and apparatus between the district and the village of Barrington. Depending on how the equipment is distributed, the board may also consider purchasing additional resources to better meet the needs of the community.
