2-Alarm fire in Sycamore, 12-16-16

This message is from Art Zern:

A fire broke out at the historic three-story Victorian, the "Boynton Mansion," built in 1886. A van was fully involved in a carport when the call came in. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy flames extending into the kitchen and both the first and second floors. The crew quickly escalated to a 2-11, and managed to contain the fire effectively. Great job by the team.

Here are some excerpts from DailyChronicle.com:

Norm Mathisen noticed an odd smell while doing carpentry work on Friday at the historic Charles O. Boynton House, located at 307 N. Main St. When he looked outside, he saw his van on fire.

The flames eventually spread from the carport where the van was parked to all three floors of the Sycamore landmark. Firefighters from over a dozen local departments spent about three hours bringing the fire under control.

Mathisen, owner of DeKalb-based Norm’s Custom Hardwood Flooring, said he didn’t notice anything wrong with the van when he returned from lunch around 12:30 p.m. He called 911 when the fire was still contained to the van.

Sycamore Assistant Fire Chief Todd Turner said the 911 call came in at 12:52 p.m., reporting a burning van in the carport. By the time crews had the fire under control in the carport, it had already spread throughout the house. To fully extinguish the fire, firefighters had to remove walls and windows.

The mansion, an 8,000-square-foot Queen Anne-style red brick home, was designed by George O. Garnsey, who also built a similar structure in DeKalb. The house remained in the Boynton family for over a century. Built in 1886 and 1887, it cost $12,000 (about $320,000 today) and has been a popular stop on local house tours.

Sycamore firefighters received assistance from several area departments, including DeKalb, Maple Park, Elburn, Kirkland, Hinckley, Sugar Grove, Burlington, Genoa-Kingston, and Cortland.

Thanks, Art.
