Lake Zurich firefighters responded to a barn fire at 21100 Shirley Road in unincorporated Palatine this morning (March 18, 2019). Witnesses reported that chickens and horses were inside the small structure, but most, if not all, managed to escape before the flames spread. A massive column of smoke was visible for miles, but crews arrived quickly and had the fire under control within 15 minutes. Despite this, extensive overhaul work kept the teams on scene for nearly an hour as they made sure no hot spots remained.
In addition to Lake Zurich Fire Department units, responding agencies included a Wauconda tower ladder, tankers from Long Grove, Barrington Countryside, and Countryside FPD, along with engines from Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, and Fox River Grove. Barrington Ambulance 1 provided medical support for personnel during the operation.
Photos from the Lake Zurich FD Facebook page show the intense nature of the fire and the quick response by multiple departments. The incident highlights the importance of rapid firefighter deployment and coordinated efforts between local fire departments to contain emergencies effectively. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
