EU requires Germany to increase its use of renewable energy to 18%

The European Commission said on the 24th that it will increase its environmental protection requirements for Germany. By 2020, Germany must increase its use of renewable energy from 8.4% in 2007 to 18%.
The European Union also proposes that the carbon dioxide emissions from German cars, homes and farms should be reduced by 20% from 1990 levels by 2020.
European Commission President Barroso said that this will be the world's most ambitious environmental protection measures. From 2011, the European Union will begin to examine whether this plan has a negative effect on the labor market.
According to a report released on January 8 by the German Renewable Energy Association, the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption in Germany rose from 8% in 2006 to 9.1% in 2007. Through the use of renewable energy, Germany reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by about 14 million tons last year, reducing imports of approximately 5.9 billion euros of crude oil, gas, coal or uranium.
