On Monday, October 2, 2023, at 5:10 AM, the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District responded to a residential structure fire on the 200 block of S. Jefferson Street. A local police officer was the first to notice the blaze and immediately began alerting the residents. Initial reports suggested a major fire with someone trapped on the third floor.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes and confirmed a working fire on the rear of the house. All occupants were safely evacuated, and crews quickly launched an interior attack. As the situation escalated, the district activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to request additional support. Seven neighboring fire districts joined the effort, helping bring the fire under control in just 45 minutes.
Despite this, firefighters spent several more hours conducting overhaul and investigation until 10:00 AM. Two pet turtles were rescued during the operation, highlighting the dedication of the responders. An adult male occupant suffered critical injuries during the fire. Due to poor weather conditions, a medical helicopter could not be dispatched, so the victim was taken by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital.
The home sustained extensive smoke and water damage and is now considered uninhabitable. All nine residents are currently receiving shelter and assistance from the American Red Cross. One firefighter also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital for treatment.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire started on the rear deck and spread rapidly into the attic. No working smoke detectors were found in the home, which is a concerning factor in such incidents. The cause of the fire is not yet confirmed, but it is not believed to be suspicious at this time. Authorities continue to investigate the incident to determine the exact origin and cause.
