From the Schiller Park Firefighters Local 5230 Facebook page:
On August 10, 2020, a three-alarm industrial building fire broke out in Franklin Park. Members of Local 5230 responded to assist Franklin Park firefighters. Truck 5 from Schiller Park entered the building with a 2 1/2-inch handline, set up their ladder, and joined Franklin Park crews on the roof. While up there, both departments made several trench cuts, allowing crews to hit the fire with a handline and fully extinguish all hot spots. SPFD was on scene for about three hours, during which a heavy wind and rain storm swept through the area. Despite the challenging conditions, all remaining Schiller Park members on duty stayed back and handled multiple storm-related calls—like downed wires, trees, and other EMS emergencies. A big thank you to Tim Olk for capturing these powerful images!
One thing we take very seriously is our post-fire routine. When we return to the station, we make sure every tool is cleaned, inspected, and ready for the next call. Every firefighter is required to wash their gear thoroughly—this is mandatory to help reduce the risk of cancer. It's part of our commitment to safety, health, and preparedness.
