On March 2, 2021, at 6:58 a.m., the Aurora Fire Department received multiple calls from witnesses reporting smoke coming from a home in the 200 block of West Downer Place. A Box Alarm was immediately dispatched, involving two engine companies, one truck company, two battalion chiefs, and a paramedic unit. As more units arrived, firefighters could see a massive column of smoke from a distance, prompting a second alarm to be called.
Upon arrival, crews found a 3½-story wood-frame multi-unit dwelling engulfed in heavy fire and smoke. Initial reports suggested someone might be trapped on the upper floor. Engine crews quickly deployed hose lines to attack the fire, while the truck company entered the structure to search for victims. The situation escalated rapidly, and the alarm was upgraded to a third due to the size of the building and the intensity of the flames.
Firefighters faced extreme heat and fire on all levels during their primary search, but no victims were found. Later, the homeowner confirmed that the building was vacant and up for sale. The fire was particularly difficult to control because of its balloon-frame construction, which allowed the flames to spread quickly through the walls and into every level of the structure.
Interior crews had to be evacuated twice, forcing a defensive exterior attack. Freezing temperatures and icy conditions around the building caused several firefighters to slip and fall. The fire required extensive overhaul work inside the walls and ceilings, making it a very labor-intensive operation. A total of 40 firefighters responded, and the building was eventually declared uninhabitable. No injuries were reported among civilians or firefighters, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
