3-Alarm fire in Aurora, 3-2-21

On March 2, 2021, at 6:58 a.m., the Aurora Fire Department received multiple emergency calls about smoke coming from a house on West Downer Place. A Box Alarm was immediately dispatched, including two engine companies, one truck company, two battalion chiefs, and a paramedic unit. As more units arrived, firefighters saw a massive column of smoke and requested a second alarm due to the intensity of the fire. Upon reaching the scene, firefighters found a 3½-story wood-frame multi-unit home engulfed in heavy flames and smoke. Initial reports indicated someone might be trapped on the upper floor. Engine crews quickly deployed hose lines to control the fire, while the truck company entered the building to search for victims. The situation escalated quickly, leading to a third alarm due to the size of the structure and the severity of the fire. Additional crews were sent, and multiple hose lines were used across all levels of the building. During the initial search, firefighters encountered extreme heat and fire on every floor, but no one was found inside. Later, it was confirmed that the home was vacant and up for sale. The fire was extremely difficult to extinguish because of the balloon-frame construction, which allowed the flames to spread rapidly through the walls. Firefighters had to conduct extensive overhaul work inside the walls and ceilings. Two times, interior crews had to evacuate, and a defensive exterior attack was initiated. The cold weather and icy conditions around the building also caused some firefighters to slip and fall. A total of 40 firefighters worked for over two and a half hours to bring the fire under control. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among civilians or firefighters. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and the building is now considered uninhabitable.
