Norm Mathisen was doing some carpentry work on Friday when he noticed something strange. He looked outside and saw his van on fire. The flames quickly spread from the carport to all three floors of the historic Charles O. Boynton House on N. Main Street.
It took firefighters from over a dozen departments around three hours to bring the fire under control. Mathisen, owner of Norm’s Custom Hardwood Flooring in DeKalb, said he didn’t notice anything wrong with the van when he returned from lunch around 12:30 p.m. He called 911 when the fire was still limited to the van.
Sycamore Assistant Fire Chief Todd Turner confirmed that the 911 call came in at 12:52 p.m. By the time they got the fire under control in the carport, it had already spread throughout the house. Firefighters had to remove walls and windows to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
The 8,000-square-foot Queen Anne-style home, designed by George O. Garnsey, was built between 1886 and 1887 for $12,000—equivalent to about $320,000 today. It was a family home for over a century and has been a popular stop on local house tours.
