Lithium-ion batteries have been widely used in portable electronic equipment, energy storage equipment and other fields. Potassium ion-based secondary battery systems have drawn much attention due to their similar physicochemical properties as lithium, their abundant reserves, their low cost, and their lower redox potential than sodium. In addition, in recent years, due to its positive and negative double-carbon batteries are environmentally friendly and inexpensive graphite materials, with low cost, high operating voltage advantage, by the industry wide attention.

Combining the respective advantages of potassium ion batteries and double carbon batteries, Tang Yongbing and his team members Ji Bifa and Zhang Fan successfully developed a new type of high performance, low cost and environmentally friendly double carbon potassium ion battery. The battery uses mesocarbon microbeads as the negative electrode and expanded graphite as the positive electrode. The electrolyte uses potassium hexafluorophosphate, which is cheap and readily available, as a potassium salt electrolyte and dissolves in an organic solvent.

The reaction mechanism is as follows: when charging, the potassium ions in the electrolyte move to the surface of the mesocarbon microbead negative electrode and are embedded in the graphite layer, while the hexafluorophosphate anion is intercalated into the positive graphite; when discharging, potassium ions from The negative electrode graphite layer prolapse, while the hexafluorophosphate positive pole graphite de-embedded back into the electrolyte.

Research shows that the new low-cost two-cell potassium-ion battery has a discharge median voltage of up to 4.5V, enabling a single button cell to illuminate two LED lights at the same time, with almost no attenuation of capacity after 100 cycles of charging and discharging the battery, making it possible to Meet high voltage device requirements.

Compared with the existing traditional lithium-ion battery technology, the new battery will greatly reduce the production cost, but also has the advantages of environment friendliness, high safety and relatively high energy density.
